Simian is pleased to announce two upcoming solo exhibitions by the US-American artists SoiL Thornton and Hardy Hill.
SoiL Thornton’s exhibition The Rest shares the same title as their recent show at Galerie Neu in Berlin. Building on the artist’s engagement with linguistic ambiguities, both exhibitions center the different meanings of the noun “rest”, which can signify either a period of stillness or relaxation, or something that remains, a kind of surplus, an other or a support. In their practice, Thornton often explores themes of identity, social norms, the creation of value and meaning through the conditions of artistic production.

The Rest at Simian presents a newly produced video work and a sculpture that are framed by a comprehensive installation. The space has been prepared to perform as a community led ecosystem or candid performance. On the occasion of the opening, there will be the activation of the work, The Rest, as part of the space will be used for a seven-hour rave. Afterwards, the space will be left as it is, with traces of the party supports and detritus remaining as the rest and forming the context for the other exhibited works.

Presented in Simian’s other exhibition space is Towerkill, a solo show by Hardy Hill, an artist and writer with a background in theology and philosophy of religion and a focus on printmaking. Connecting to the artist’s interest in questions of activeness, subjecthood, representation, and visual regimes, among other things, the exhibition consists of three main elements: The first is a selection of recent works on paper, using lithography in combination with ink, chalk, gouache, and pencil. While they are in line with Hill’s earlier works, often depicting imaginary figures within suggested spatial settings, they stand out due to their toned background and particular usage of light.

The second element is a new iteration of Rational Theater, an ongoing series of installation works composed of the following components: Lamps, smart-outlets, and the text of a play, which is transposed into a lighting sequence. The lights stand for the characters in the respective play and are activated in relation to their appearances on stage – boiling down the theatrical form to states of presence or absence and thus separating the “person” from it. The third element of Towerkill is an architectural intervention: A system of false walls are built within the exhibition space. The walls trace the superimposed floor plans of the artist’s apartment as well as his partner’s and thereby create a web of passageways.

Simian er begejstret for at kunne annoncere to kommende soloudstillinger af de amerikanske kunstnere SoiL Thornton og Hardy Hill.

SoiL Thorntons udstilling The Rest bærer samme titel som deres seneste udstilling på Galerie Neu i Berlin. Begge udstillinger bygger på kunstnerens engagement i sproglige tvetydigheder og centrerer sig om de forskellige betydninger af substantivet »Rest«, som enten kan betyde en periode med stilhed eller afslapning eller noget, der er tilbage, en slags overskud, en anden eller en støtte. I deres praksis udforsker Thornton ofte temaer som identitet, sociale normer og værdi- og betydningsskabelse ved at beskæftige sig med betingelserne for kunstnerisk produktion.

The Rest på Simian præsenterer et nyproduceret videoværk samt en skulptur, som er indrammet af en omfattende installation. Udstillingsrummet er udformet til at fungere som et fællesskabsdrevet økosystem eller en kollektiv performance. I forbindelse med åbningen vil værket The Rest blive aktiveret, da en del af rummet vil blive brugt til et syv timer langt rave. Efterfølgende vil rummet blive efterladt, som det er, med spor af festens aktiviteter og efterladenskaber, der forbliver som ’resten’ og danner konteksten for de andre udstillede værker.

I Simians andet udstillingsrum præsenteres Hardy Hill’s soloudstilling Towerkill. Hill er kunstner og forfatter og har en baggrund i teologi og religionsfilosofi, og arbejder særligt med grafik. Udstillingen relaterer sig til kunstnerens interesse for spørgsmål om handlinger, subjektivitet, repræsentation og visuelle regimer bestående af tre hovedelementer: Det første er en række nyere papirarbejder, hvor litografi kombineres med blæk, kridt, gouache og blyant. Disse værker ligger i forlængelse af Hills tidligere praksis, der ofte skildrer imaginære figurer i antydede rumlige scenarier, men de skiller sig ud gennem tonede baggrunde og særlige brug af lys.

Det andet element er en ny iteration af Rational Theater, en igangværende serie af installationsværker bestående af lamper, smart-plugs og teksten til et skuespil, som oversættes til en lyssekvens. Lysene repræsenterer karaktererne i det pågældende skuespil og aktiveres i takt med deres optræden på scenen – hvilket koger den teatralske form ned til tilstande af tilstedeværelse eller fravær og adskiller dermed »personen« fra den. Det tredje element er en arkitektonisk intervention: Et system af falske vægge opført i udstillingsrummet. Væggene sporer de overlejrede plantegninger af kunstnerens og hans partners lejlighed og skaber derved et net af passager.
