Programmet for 2024 begynder med duoudstillingen POV af Lukas Danys og Jan S. Hansen og soloudstillingen The End af Freja Sofie Kirk. På hver deres måde undersøger kunstnerne det særlige ved den menneskelige eksistens og perceptionen samt fysiske materialiteters og teknologiens indflydelse på kognition og fantasi, hukommelse og glemsel, videnskab og fiktion - og omvendt.

I POV reflekterer Danys og S. Hansen over kløften mellem de sensoriske opfattelser af menneskets fysiske omgivelser og deres oversættelse til mentale oplevelser. Kunstnerne overvejer utilstrækkeligheden af teknologiske, videnskabelige, filosofiske eller spirituelle forsøg på at kortlægge disse mangler. Kunstnerne trækker på en bred vifte af referencer, både mere og mindre kendte, mens de fokuserer på den rolle, som vaner, billeder og modeller spiller, og undersøger det menneskelige sinds uforklarlige specificitet og dets forhold til andre former for bevidsthed.

I udstillingen er værker af forskellige dimensioner, formater og medier fysisk og metaforisk indrammet af en villalignende scenografi. Denne indvendige/udvendige ramme refererer til og genundersøger etablerede psykologiske og filosofiske terminologier samt forskellige niveauer og skalaer af menneskelig forståelse. Som en forkortelse for "point of view" rejser udstillingen spørgsmål om subjektive indtryk, kollektivitet og forestillingen om angiveligt neutrale perspektiver. Samtidig antyder udtrykket ”POV”, empatiske reaktioner og interaktioner med gensidig påvirkning. Titlen antyder en agens, der ikke mindst anerkender de besøgendes egen bevidsthed i udstillingen og dens arkitektur.

I Simians andet udstillingsrum præsenteres Kirks første større soloudstilling, The End, hvortil den Københavns-baserede kunstner har udviklet et nyt videoværk med samme titel. Det tager udgangspunkt i de måder, hvorpå fortællinger bruges til at navigere i virkeligheden. Filmen veksler mellem indtryk fra et fiktivt hospital og en simuleret operation og introducerer Todd, en professionel skuespiller, der har specialiseret sig i at spille syge og døende patienter i forbindelse med øvelser i medicinske praksissituationer.

Lag af stemmer og fragmenter fra manuskripter bidrager til at udviske grænserne mellem det fiktive og det faktiske, mens elementer af gentagelse i både tale og billede omformer ideer om linearitet og forståelse. Således undersøger værket de visuelle, verbale og rituelle sprog, der er forbundet med dødens uundgåelighed, og den plads og form, den får - i livet såvel som på skærmen. Værkets titel, The End, associeres med de sidste billeder i en film og peger dermed på et medie, der, i modsætning til andre fortællinger, kan genstartes igen og igen.

Simian is pleased to announce two upcoming exhibitions:

Lukas Danys and Jan S. Hansen – POV
Freja Sofie Kirk – The End

The program of 2024 begins with the duo show POV by Lukas Danys and Jan S. Hansen and the solo exhibition The End by Freja Sofie Kirk. Each in their own manner, the artists examine the particularities of human life and perception as well as the influence of physical material and technological matter on cognition and imagination, memory and oblivion, science and fiction—and vice versa.

In POV, Danys and S. Hansen reflect on the gap between the sensory perceptions of material surroundings and their translation into mental experiences. The artists contemplate the insufficiency of technological, scientific, philosophical, or spiritual attempts to map these glitches. Drawing from diverse sources, both more and less renowned, while focusing on the role of habits, images, and models, they investigate the inexplicable specificity of the human mind and its relation to other forms of consciousness.

In the exhibition, works of various dimensions, formats and mediums are physically and metaphorically framed by a villa-like scenography. The resulting interior-exterior setting references and re-examines established psychological and philosophical terminologies as well as different levels and scales of human apprehension. As an abbreviation for “point of view,” POV raises questions about the subjectivity of impressions, the realm of collectivity, and the notion of supposedly neutral perspectives. At the same time, the expression implies empathic reactions and interactions of reciprocal influence. It suggests an agency that not least recognizes the visitors’ own awareness within the exhibition and its architecture.

Presented in Simian’s other exhibition space is Kirk’s first larger solo exhibition, The End, for which the Copenhagen-based artist has developed a new video work with the same title. It takes as its starting point the ways in which narratives are used to navigate reality. Alternating between impressions from a fictional hospital and a simulated surgery, the film introduces Todd, a professional actor specialized in playing ill and dying patients in the context of medical practice situations.

Layers of voice and fragments from scripts contribute to blurring the lines between the fictitious and the actual while elements of repetition in both speech and image remold ideas of linearity and certainty. Thus, the work investigates the visual, verbal, and ritual languages associated with the inevitability of death, and the space and shape it is granted—in daily life as well as on the screen. The work’s title, The End, calls forth a film’s final frames and thereby points to a medium that, unlike other narratives, can be restarted time and again.
