Lynn Hershman Leeson - The Electronic Diaries (1984-2019)

The works of Rolf Nowotny and Lynn Hershman Leeson populate Simian with transformative bodies and corporeal understandings. Where Nowotny's characters contort themselves in distorted positions and appear as demonic shadows of human bodies in the total installation NOCLIPLILT, Leeson turns the camera towards her own body in the seminal video work The Electronic Diaries (1984-2019).

Rolf Nowotny - NOCLIPLILT

The Danish artist Rolf Nowotny (b. 1978) transforms Simian's largest space into a haunted house, populated by insistent beings who confronts the visitor with their split tongues, cleaven heads and deformed bodies. They inhabit a home that in no way feels homely. As you cross the threshold and wander through the house, you are sucked into an intimate and claustrophobic scenario. A scenography of rooms are decorated with worn and recycled farmhouse furniture that bears the traces of previous owners, but what at first might seem like something cosy and familiar appears twisted and frightening. Game developer Kitty Horrorshow has produced a soundtrack to each room and as you are gradually pulled through the house, the tyrannical undertones and the many traumas and tales that live and breathe within the walls of the home begin to seep out. Like a snail, we carry our home with us. It stays in us and we stay in it - for better or worse.

Nowotny shows how the membranes between skin and landscape are extremely porous and how architecture, interior decoration and our material surroundings are intertwined with our identity and self-understanding.

The exhibition is supported by the Danish Arts Foundation.

Lynn Hershman Leeson - The Electronic Diaries (1984-2019)

Themes of identity and self-awareness also underpin American artist Lynn Hershman Leeson's (b. 1941) groundbreaking video work The Electronic Diaries. The work is a personal and artistic documentation of Leeson's own life and innermost thoughts. With the camera turned towards herself, she records and shares her most personal experiences and traumas with, among other things, physical and mental violence. By dissolving her own fear and shame into a larger narrative of women's defeat, empowerment and triumph, Leeson confronts her own experiences and insists on a new narrative and portrayal of the (female) body.

The work anticipates in many ways current use of social media and online culture, where personal portrayals are shared with an unknown audience. Similarly, questions of authenticity and credibility are constantly present in Leeson’s work. Seen in the perspective of the present, The Electronic Diaries negotiates how we perform and create our identity - internally and externally. In the end, one needs to ask the question; where is the line drawn between a lived and a performed life?

The exhibition is realized with support from Altman Siegel Gallery, San Fransisco, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and Kunsthal Charlottenborg.
