Simian præsenterer to nye udstillinger, CHEVROLET af den canadiske kunstner Aleksander Hardashnakov og gruppeudstillingen CRY ME A RIVER med deltagelse af 11 internationale kunstnere. De to udstillingers narrativer undersøger spændingerne, og frigørelserne, imellem fysiske konsekvenser og semantiske forbindelser, mellem formodede virkeligheder og virkelige fantasier.

CHEVROLET, der er Hardashnakovs første soloudstilling i Danmark, består af en række nye værker udviklet det seneste år. De 12 billeder i udstillingen repræsenterer kunstnerens tilbagevenden til maleriet efter en pause på fire år, og fremstår både som en afvigelse fra, og en fortsættelse af hans tidligere arbejde. Udstillingen kredser om to hovedtemaer, og er en celebrering af amerikansk kultur og kristendom. Disse to temaer samles i billedet af vejkrydset, hvor den amerikanske opfattelse af ’den åbne vej’ og krucifikset mødes. Krydset er også et skæringspunkt mellem to retninger, hvor en afgørelse eller forandring er nært forestående: Det der starter som to muligheder, forgrener sig til mange, når først et valg er truffet.
Udstillingens titel henviser til de forarbejdede ikoner der optræder i malerierne. Som symbol bærer navnet Chevrolet, som brand, og som navn, en række betydningslag, der karakteriserer Hardashnakovs praksis: en kondenseret mangfoldighed, der tillader en omfattende, dybdegående aflæsning. I vejkrydsets centrum er syns- og bevægelsesretningen åben.
I det andet udstillingsrum præsenteres CRY ME A RIVER. Gruppeudstillingen introducerer værker af manuel arturo abreu (DO), James Bantone (CH), Jason Hirata (US), Deborah Joyce-Holman (CH), Flora Leite (BR), Gabriela Mureb (BR), davi de jesus do nascimento (BR), Yná Kabe Rodríguez Olfenza (BR), Maya Quilolo (BR), Sung Tieu (VN) og Wisrah Villefort (BR), hvoraf flere udstiller i Danmark for første gang.

Udstillingen reflekterer over objekters fysikalitet i relation til deres symbolikker, deres allegoriske og deres ulogiske egenskaber, ved bl.a. at inddrage Lacans overvejelser om den menneskelige forståelse af objekter. De udstillede værker er udtryk for forskelligartede miljøer og erkendelser, virkeligheder og fantasier. Advarsler mod potentielle misbrug og udnyttelser inddrages i værkernes fortællinger, i beskrivelser af subjektiviteter og afhængighedsforhold. Således peger CRY ME A RIVER på aktuelle diskurser om økonomiske forhold, identiteter, global handel, vold og samtidskunsten i sig selv. De deltagende kunstnere, der er inviteret af Wisrah Villefort, opfordrer i deres værker de besøgende til at reflektere over, og genoverveje, de indbyrdes relationer i udstillingen og deres eget forhold til objekter, til kunstige og til naturlige omgivelser.

Simian is pleased to announce two new exhibitions, CHEVROLET by Canadian artist Aleksander Hardashnakov and the group show CRY ME A RIVER featuring 11 international artists. Rich in narratives, they investigate the tensions (and releases) between physical implications and semantic connotations, supposed realities and the realness of imagination.

CHEVROLET is Hardashnakov’s first solo show in Denmark. The exhibition consists of 12 works developed this year. Constituting the artist’s return to painting after a four-year break, the paintings represent both a departure from and a continuation of his earlier work. The exhibition revolves around two main themes, a celebration of American culture and Christianity. These strands of thought are brought together in the image of the crossroad, within which the American experience of the open road and the crucifix converge. The crossing is also an intersection of two paths, where a decision or change is imminent: yet, what seems like two options become many more once a choice is made.

The show’s title relates to the use and alteration of icons in the paintings. As a symbol, the name-turned-brand-turned-name embodies the multiple layers of meaning characteristic to Hardashnakov’s practice: a condensed complexity that enables broad and deep readings. At the crossroad’s centre, the direction of sight and movement are left open.

In its other exhibition space, Simian presents CRY ME A RIVER. The exhibition reflects on the physicality of objects in relation to their symbolic, allegoric and illogic faculties by, inter alia, drawing on Lacan’s considerations on human perception of objects. The works shown embody diverse ecologies and epistemologies, realities and fantasies. Cautioning against potential misuses or exploitations, they engage multiple histories, subjectivities, and dependencies. Thus, CRY ME A RIVER alludes to current discourses around economies, identities, historic global trade, violence, and contemporary art itself. Invited by Wisrah Villefort, the participating artists encourage visitors to think—and rethink—intrinsic interrelations within the show as well as their own relationship to objects, artificial and natural surroundings.
