A HOMAGE TO USTAD ZAKIR HUSSAIN - (1951-2024)
Fazal Quresh - tabla
Kala Ramnath - violin
Jayanthi Kumaresh - vina
Anantha Krishnan - mridangam
Fazal Quresh, Kala Ramnath, Jayanthi Kumaresh & Anantha Krishnan comes to pay homage to Zakir Hussain in this Quartet, originally a trio group of Zakir Hussain's Triveni. Leading Indian classical exponents of their respective instruments - tabla, violin, saraswati, veena & Mridangam — each is also renowned as a virtuoso collaborator, path breaker and educator, advancing the art of their particular instruments to remarkable levels in the context of their classical traditions and beyond. Feted and honoured in India and abroad with numerous awards, each has successfully toured all over the world with their own acclaimed solo projects.
Triveni is the mythical site of the union of three sacred rivers in India, and the name aptly represents the confluence of the varied musicalities which the four maestros bring together. A hallmark of Zakir Hussain’s iconic career has been his groundbreaking work at the forefront of brilliant musical dialogues between Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) music. With Kala Ramnath, an innovative representative of North Indian raga tradition, Jayanthi Kumaresh, the leading exponent of the ancient South Indian veena, and Zakir Hussain seamlessly stitching North and South Indian rhythm traditions to provide a bridge for veena and violin to meet will be assured by his brother Fazal Qureshi and his preferred mridangam player Anantha R Krishnan. TRIVENI, now a Quartet promises to be a fluent, joyous and entirely original musical conversation, a sonic experience of the highest order as imagined by Zakir Hussain.
The world lost a jewel and a legendary musician Zakir Hussain on the 15th december 2024. The world went silent with the sad news of his passing over. Zakir Hussain has left us with memories that fill our hearts and music which will resonate for generations to come. It was one of his last wish to perform with his Triveni Trio with Kala Ramnath & Jayanthi Kumaresh in Europe. Sadly, it was not meant to be that way. To cherish his last wish musicians who were close to him and his family have come together to realise his Triveni dream. This has been dedicate to his loving memory.
“On December 15 at 3:42 pm, we lost one of the greatest rhythmists that has ever lived on this planet. Zakir Hussain was my brother for over 50 years, my closest collaborator, and my dearest friend. Over the years we have shared places reserved only for those whose lives are totally engulfed by drums.
His knowledge of both western and eastern world rhythms was unequalled. He had perfect pitch and total recall for the most complicated rhythmic cycles. His instruments were like the rains, dense sheets of sounds performed like blurs of lightning-fast fingers on small, tuned drums. With the skill of a surgeon, he weaved a rhythmic spell with each finger at the most rapid speeds that can be imaginable.
The world will never be the same without him.”- Mickey HART
