Digitale værktøjer til musikproduktion opfattes tit som mulighedernes land. Teknologien er indhyllet i en fortælling om demokratisering, fremskridt og kunstnerisk frihed. Men der er flere sider af den historie. Det viser den britisk-iranske musiker, komponist og forsker Khyam Allami med sit skarpt udtænkte projekt Apotome, som for nylig vandt en specialpris ved Ars Electronica 2021 – en prestigiøs pris for ny mediekunst.
Khyam Allami kaster lys over de indlejrede fordomme i teknologien: Usynlige skævvridninger, der kan forklares som levn fra kolonifortiden og et snævert vestligt kunstsyn.
Den eksisterende typer af software til musikproduktion tager nemlig udgangspunkt i et vestligt tonesystem, som ophøjes til standard. Teknologien er alt andet end neutral: Indiske skalaer, arabiske instrumentstemninger og ikke-vestlige toneintervaller falder uden for normen og usynliggøres. Og det har omfattende musikalske, kulturelle, sociale og politiske konsekvenser for vores kollektive muligheder for at skabe og lytte til musik i alle dens tænkelige facetter.
Som kunstnerisk-aktivistisk modsvar til den mangel har Khyam Allami skabt Apotome: Et stykke afkoloniseret kompositionssoftware udviklet i samarbejde med Counterpoint. Projektet er et resultat af Allamis igangværende phd-forskning, som sigter efter at give musikskabere fra enhver kulturel baggrund friheden til at arbejde med et helt blankt lærred.
Allami påpeger de enorme områder af musikkens spektrum, som vi sjældent forholder os til. Apotome er et præcist kirurgisk greb, som søger at afkolonisere vores kreativitet og lytning ved at ændre musikkens teknologiske forudsætninger. Og med sin liveoptræden på Gong Tomorrow gør han et kompliceret emne sanseligt tilgængeligt og indstiller vores antenner på de myriader af musikalske muligheder, som ellers overhøres.
Under Gong Tomorrow 2021 vil Apotome blive demonstreret, diskuteret og afprøvet i forskellige sammenhænge. Til Apotome Live på Volume vil lokale musikere i København komponere og fremføre værker live på Apotome sammen med Khyam Allami.
OM KHYAM ALLAMI:
Khyam Allami (f. 1981 i Damaskus) er britisk-iransk multiinstrumentalist, komponist, forsker og grundlægger af Nawa Records. Med det båndløse strengeinstrument oud som sit hovedinstrument har han i sin kunstneriske forskning arbejdet på at udvikle et samtidsmusikalsk og eksperimentalt repertoire baseret på arabisk musik, med fokus på stemning og mikrotonalitet. Han har en BA og en MA i musiketnologi fra SOAS, London og er pt. i gang med en ph.d. i komposition på Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, University of Birmingham.

Gong Tomorrow 2021 handler om social lytning. At lytte er den ultimative empatiske handling. Lytning kan skabe skælv i vores selvforståelser og åbne vores forståelseshorisonter. Under otte dages festival fejrer Gong Tomorrow 2021 musik, der udvider bevidstheden og tegner konturerne af en anden verden.
Gong Tomorrow er en årlig festival for ny eksperimenterende musik og lydkunst. Den præsenterer koncerter i ekstraordinære rammer, musikalske eksperimenter, genremøder, samtaler og workshops samt tværæstetiske samarbejder mellem lokale såvel som internationale kunstnere. Gong Tomorrow 2021 finder sted fra den 3. til den 10. september på en række forskellige københavnske koncertsteder i samarbejde med ALICE cph.

Apotome was created as a tool to help counter the cultural asymmetry embedded in modern music-making tools, which share a bias inherited from Western music theory and culture. With his horizon-expanding method, Khyam Allami point towards more liberated, creative, inclusive, and culturally balanced music-making processes.
During Gong Tomorrow 2021, Apotome will be showcased and debated in various ways, including a live performance at Volume involving local musicians from Copenhagen.
Gong Tomorrow is an annual festival for new experimental music and sound art, featuring concerts in extraordinary settings, musical experiments, genre crossovers, talks and workshops, and cross-aesthetic meetings between local as well as international artists. Gong Tomorrow 2021 takes place from 3rd to 10th September in various locations across Copenhagen in cooperation with ALICE cph.
