Det er sjældent, at noget så umiddelbart tyst og underspillet, vækker så stærke følelser, som den japanske musiker Ichiko Aoba har formået. Hun har allerede udgivet en række plader i Japan, men har med sit seneste værk, “Windswept Adan”, for alvor slået sig fast hos vestlige lyttere. Herhjemme gav GAFFA albummet sjældne 6 stjerner, og anmelder Simon Heggum kaldte både pladen for en smuk feberdrøm og “en af de største lytteoplevelser, jeg har haft, i mit virke som anmelder for dette magasin overhovedet”. Også amerikanske Anthony Fantano har på sin musikblog The Needle Drop rost albummet til skyerne.
Hvad er det så, der gør Ichiko Aoba så unik på en scene, hvor det ikke skorter på drømmende kammer-folk? Først og fremmest formår hun at skabe helstøbte universer og stemninger ved at forene et sangskriver-baseret udgangspunkt med den rige japanske tradition for ambient. Hun siger selv, at hendes musik er direkte inspireret af hendes egne drømme, og det fornemmer man på musikken, hvor “drømmende” ikke bare er en vag frase, men hvor en surrealistisk magi gennemsyrer hele strukturen. Elementer af jazz, næsten Debussy-klingende impressionisme og flimrende pop trænger ind den ambiente folk og skaber ægte magi, som vil fortrylle fans af såvel Vashti Bunyan, Cocteau Twins og Midori Takada.
Magi er der også på spil hos Etran de L’Aïr fra Niger - skønt det er en magi af en anderledes støvet og rå slags. Her leveres solid guitar-ekstase i feberhede forløb, der baserer sig på traditioner fra bryllupsorkestre i det nordlige Niger, og som forbinder sig med den tuareg-blues, der kendes fra navne som ALICE-aktuelle Tamikrest og Mdou Moctar.
Etran de L’Aïr refererer dog selv til Mali-musikere som Ali Farka Touré og Oumou Sangaré, snarere end til de kendte tuareg-navne, når de skal nævne deres primære inspirationer. Og dette får dem til at skille sig ud. Bandet, der egentlig er et kollektiv af familiemedlemmer, startede i 1995 i byen Agadez. Her havde de til at starte med kun yderst skrabede elementer til rådighed. F.eks. havde de ingen elektriske guitarer, men måtte manipulere med akustiske guitarer for at forstærke og forvrænge dem. Denne charmerende og håndholdte tilgang lå også bag deres debutalbum, “No. 1”, der udkom på Sahel Sounds i 2018. Albummet blev indspillet live på en mobiltelefon, og det giver en utrolig autentisk følelse af råt dokument - en følelse, som fik The New Yorkers Amanda Petrusich til at udråbe udgivelsen som årets bedste album. Nu er Etran de L’Aïr klar til at udgive den længe ventede opfølger, og albummet følges op af tour, som altså også bringer dem til København.

Ichiko Aoba has released several albums in Japan, but it wasn’t until last year’s stunning “Windswept Adan” that she truly caught the ears of Western listeners. Taking inspiration directly from her own dreams, Ichiko Aoba weaves together a surreal and mesmerizing blend of psychedelic folk, ambient, impressionist classical music and jazz. Simple and beautiful on the surface but with deep and mysterious layers that draws the listener in. We are looking very much forward to a Danish show by this incredible musician - fans of anything from Vashti Bunyan and Tim Buckley to Cocteau Twins and Midori Takada should definitely not miss this.
Hailing from the town of Agadez, which is known as “the gateway to the desert”, Etran de L’Aïr captures the pulse of everyday life at weddings, baptisms, political events, outdoor soirees alike. Etran’s brand of Sahara blues deviates with its use of three guitars instead of two, sounding more live-wired and unfettered than any of their peers. Operating on a headstrong grassroots level, these stars of the air stand at the vanguard of innovation, drawing more from artists like Oumou Sangaré and Ali Farka Touré than the established Tuareg ensembles. Their debut album from 2018 - a rough and charming document recorded on a cell phone - made Amanda Petrusich from The New Yorker such a devoted fan, that she labelled it the album of the year. In 2021 the band will finally release a new album and embark on a European tour that also brings them to Copenhagen!
