In English:
In her sun-drenched, experimental pop, vocalist and double bassist Ëda Diaz unites her French and Colombian heritage.
The double bass became her lifeline. Ëda Diaz, daughter of a Colombian urban planner and a French dress maker, had nearly given up on music. Since childhood, she had studied and performed classical singing and piano. But it wasn’t until she picked up the double bass at age 24 and combined it with her voice, that she truly began to enjoy making music. And this was when she decided, that this particular blend would be her path in life – a decision we’re quite thankful she made!
Ëda Diaz creates near-irresistible, experimental pop, infused with inspiration from the Latin American music genres her Colombian grandmother used to listen to. Last year, she released her debut album Suave Bruta with the aim of uniting the cultures, languages, and rhythms she grew up with. Judging by the reviews, she succeeded. The Guardian, for instance, praised the “refreshing contrast” between Diaz’s raw production and her jazzy vocals, while ‘Suave Bruta’ was described as “a ridiculously pleasurable album,” lauded for blending traditional and ‘modern’ sounds in a way that honors both. We may not have gauro, canelazo, or guarapo on the ALICE bar menu just yet, so you’ll have to imagine those while dancing the night away to Ëda Diaz’s sun-drenched sound!
