🖤 What is ballroom? 🖤
The underground ballroom scene has it roots as far back as to the 1920 in Harlem, New York, and was created by the Black and Latin Trans women and Drags, as a new safe space due to racism they faced within the white pageant scene. It evolved into many new categories and became not only a space for trans women of color to enjoy the safeties of community but of all queer people of color to create and express what was not allowed at the time to express in the public.

While the community is not as segregated as it used to be, we remind you that the space was created and are ruled by people of color, and we remind you that the underground ballroom scene will not accept any types of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, body shaming or any types of discrimination. Ballroom welcomes everyone and respects everyone, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, body, sex or status. Ballroom is a place of love, unity, creativity and mutual respect.

If you are not a person of color and/or person of queer experience, we would like to reinstate that you are a guest within the ballroom community and should follow rules as everyone else. Please be mindful of the space you take as a guest, and you will be welcomed with open arms.

Bring it in a sweet pastel look, eat it up and leave no crumbs.

🎨 MF SEX SIREN / 🏆 (one trophy)
“Untitled” (Go-Go Dancing Platform) by Felix Gonzales-Torres

🎨 FF SEX SIREN / 🏆 (one trophy)
“The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli
Born from sea foam, the goddess Venus is the Greco-Roman embodiment of love, beauty, sex and desire. In Botticelli’s painting, she is portrayed as a beautiful woman rising from a seashell: her kind gaze invoking love while her naked body conjures lust. Tonight, you must emerge on the runway just like Venus and seduce the judges into your love spell.

🎨 LION BABE / 🏆 (one trophy)
”Infinity Mirror Room: Phalli's Field” by Yayoi Kusama
In 1965, Yayoi Kusama arranged hundreds of soft phallic forms in a roughly 25 square-metre mirrored room, the artist's first infinity room. The stuffed fabric tubers, which were multiplied through infinite reflection created an almost psychosexual experience for the viewer. Get inspired by Kusama's breakthrough art piece and use reflective material, polka dots and/or tentacles to tempt the judges into your own erotic universe.

🎨 BODY (FF, MF) / 🏆🏆(two trophies)
“Untitled (body painting)” by Keith Haring
Keith Haring is known for his iconic visual language which he used to cover countless canvases, walls and objects. It was only natural that he would also expand his universe to body paintings, first with the provocative dancer Bill T. Jones before famously transforming Grace Jones in a series of photographs captured by Robert Mapplethorpe. Show us BODY – with a graphic body painting design inspired by Haring’s iconography.

Whether you walk fitness, luscious, muscular… body. This category is for you.

👗👗👗 FASHION 👗👗👗

🎨 EUROPEAN RUNWAY OTA / 🏆 (one trophy)

Tonight you need to pay homage to Klein’s invention in a monochromatic look that is all about this distinctive ultramarine blue tone. (Shoes don’t count)

🎨 TAG TEAM EUROPEAN & ALL AMERICAN RUNWAY OTA / 🏆(one trophy) + 150 Euros Cash Prize

A diptych is a work of art composed of two canvas or objects that are joined together to form an unified piece. Tonight, you need to join forces and become one on the runway. Inspired by Warhol’s “Marilyn Diptych”, you must feature two cohesive looks : one in bright colours for European Runway and one in black and white for All American Runway. Your looks don’t have to be identical, but make it look like you are part of the same collection.

“Crown vs. Crown”

"La vierge noire (Adut Akech)” by Pierre et Gilles
Inspired by religious icons, mythical characters and queer archetypes, the French duo Pierre et Gilles are known for their exhuberant, maximalist works of art that transform famous figures into god-like idols adorned in kitsch elements. Tonight, get inspired by this grandiose portrait of Adut Akech to create the most dramatic and luxurious impression (a crown must be part of the look).

“Red Kings” by Jean-Michel Basquiat
The crown motif present throughout the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat is probably one of the most iconic symbols of modern art history. First appearing in the 1981 painting “Red Kings”, it is seen as a gesture to reclaim the notion of greatness for all the Black talents who have been silenced and discredited through history. Tonight, you need to pay homage to the unique visual universe of Basquiat with a look that tells your story (a crown must be part of the look).

🎨 BIZARRE OTA / 🏆 (one trophy) + 150 euro cash prize
“Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” by Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt’s world famous painting “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I”, also known as “The Lady in Gold”, will be the guiding inspiration for Bizarre. We want to see this symbolic masterpiece turned into a bizarre art piece. Twist it, shake it, make it drip like the glory that it is when taking the stage.

🎨 DESIGNERS DELIGHT OTA / 🏆(one trophy)
“Spring 1997 Couture” by Manfred Thierry Mugler

Your assignment is to design and create your own unique look inspired by this masterful collection. For your 10s bring your inspiration picture and a portfolio of your design process. Will you be a painter, a sculptor or a poet? Tools representing your discipline are mandatory.

The Muse and the Artist
Whether it is Gala and Salvador Dali, Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol, Patti Smith and Robert Mappelthorpe or Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, muses and artists have throughout art history lived in symbiotic relationships of passion and inspiration. Sometimes loving, sometimes tumultuous, these couples are the sparks behind many works of art. Tonight, we want you to channel an artist and a muse on their way to the latest gallery opening. Will you be bold and dramatic or cool and arrogant?

“The Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi
Tonight, you are the conductor of your very own orchestra. All eyes are on you : your every gesture and movements are deeply connected to the music and tell a story that goes beyond words. Staccato or Legato? Every detail matters. Bring it in classical outfit (bow tie and conductor wand mandatory) and get your 10s by performing to Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons - Summer in G Minor, RV. 315: III. Presto”.

“Swan Lake” by Pjotr Tchaikovsky
More than 100 years ago, Tchaikovsky composed this ballet featuring the now well-known figures of the vulnerable and pure White Swan competing with her counterpart the audacious and seductive Black Swan for the heart of prince Siegfried. Swan Lake is a story of love, passion, magic and sorrow. For your performance you have to bring it in a ballet inspired effect - whether you choose a light or dark colour is up to you.

Come in an outfit with a metallic finish in the colour of your choice and show us lines and stretches of the new way flair. The look doesn’t have to be fully metallic, but the metallic tone must be dominating.
