Final Descent: Andrea Belfi & Jules Reidy (IT/AU) + Margo Sanda (IT)

The Australian guitarist Jules Reidy’s airy guitar figures weave in and out of the Italian drummer Andrea Belfi’s syncopated, percussive patterns in this new collaboration. Last year, they released the critically acclaimed Dessus Oben Alto Up, and now they are coming to Union in Copenhagen with their hypnotic, improvised music.

There is a ghostly quality to Andrea Belfi and Jules Reidy’s 2024 collaborative release, Dessus Oben Alto Up. Reidy’s microtonal and kaleidoscopic, feather-light guitar strokes weave in and out of Belfi’s organic and ever-changing percussive patterns. It is almost impossible to tell that the album was created during a residency between two musicians who had barely met before pressing the record button.

The result is a dazzling, long-form improvisation, where the two musicians slowly waltz between floating, airy expressions and ominous, heavy dissonance, together creating a soundscape in which time momentarily stands still.

Andrea Belfi’s distinctive sound emerges from the dynamic interplay between his fluid drumming and complex electronic soundscapes, where the manipulation of time creates a sense of stillness in motion, thus giving the music a ritualistic quality.

Jules Reidy challenges all preconceived notions of what guitar music can be. Their latest work is best described as a series of non-traditional song forms, combining wavering harmonies, rhythmic elasticity, and abstract narratives at the intersection of the acoustic and the processed.

Margo Sanda (IT)

Margo Sanda is a multifaceted artist working across music production, composition, and multimedia arts. Raised in Lake Garda (IT), her artistic journey began with the Misto Mame collective in Rome, followed by experiences in Bristol, Berlin, and back in Italy. She currently resides in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she studies at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory.

With three EPs released, Margo explores the realms of avant-garde songwriting, free improvisation, and computer-based deconstruction, featuring various collaborations with musicians from the classical and jazz worlds.

Deeply inspired by non-Western rhythms, Margo weaves them into her music to challenge perception and expectation. Her vocals blend the dramatic depth of ’60s-’70s Italian singers like Mina and Milva with contemporary spoken word.

Blending electronic effects with acoustic elements, she crafts emotionally powerful soundscapes, defined by a tactile, immersive production style where contrasts and sudden shifts play a central role.

Sidste år udgav de den kritikerroste Dessus Oben Alto Up, og nu kommer de til Union i København med deres hypnotiske, improviserede musik.

Der er en spøgelsesagtig kvalitet over Andrea Belfi og Jules Reidys collab-udgivelse fra 2024, Dessus Oben Alto Up. Reidys mikrotonale og kalejdoskopiske, fjerlette guitarstrøg væver sig ind og ud mellem Belfis organiske og foranderlige percussion-spil. Det er umiddelbart svært at høre, at pladen er blevet til under et residency mellem to musikere, som knap havde mødt hinanden, før de trykkede på optag.

Resultatet er en blændende, langstrakt improvisation, hvor de to musikere langsomt valser mellem svævende, luftige udtryk og faretruende, tung dissonans og sammen skaber et lydtæppe, hvorunder tiden for en stund står stille.

Andrea Belfis karakteristiske lyd opstår i det dynamiske samspil mellem hans flydende trommespil og komplekse elektroniske lydlandskaber, hvor manipulationen af tid skaber en følelse af stilstand i bevægelse og dermed giver musikken en rituel karakter.

Jules Reidy udfordrer alle forestillinger om, hvad guitarmusik kan være. Deres seneste arbejde kan bedst beskrives som en række ikke-traditionelle sangformer, der kombinerer vaklende harmonier, rytmisk elasticitet og abstrakte fortællinger i krydsfeltet mellem det akustiske og det processerede.

Margo Sanda (IT)

Margo Sanda er en alsidig kunstner, der bevæger sig mellem musikproduktion, komposition og multimediekunst. Hun voksede op ved Gardasøen og startede sin kunstneriske rejse i Rom med Misto Mame-kollektivet, før hun drog videre til Bristol, Berlin og tilbage til Italien. Nu bor hun i København, hvor hun studerer på Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium.

Med tre EP’er ude har Margo kastet sig ud i alt fra avantgardistisk sangskrivning og fri improvisation til computerbaseret dekonstruktion, ofte i samarbejde med musikere fra den klassiske og jazzede verden.

Hun henter stor inspiration fra ikke-vestlige rytmer, som hun væver ind i sin musik for at udfordre lytternes forventninger. Hendes vokal blander den dramatiske nerve fra 60’ernes og 70’ernes italienske sangerinder som Mina og Milva med nutidens spoken word.

Ved at lege med kontraster og pludselige skift skaber hun stærke, sanselige lydlandskaber, hvor elektroniske effekter og akustiske elementer smelter sammen i en taktil og dragende produktion.
