Siden deres debut fra 2011, “Black Up”, har Seattle-projektet Shabazz Palaces skabt sig et ry som et af de mest visionære hiphop-navne. Et projekt, der på både gennemført og krøllet vis, blander hiphop med spektakulære sci-fi fortællinger, afrikansk percussion og ikke mindst en solid inspiration fra jazz og funk. Og et projekt, der har samarbejdet med navne som Flying Lotus, Battles og Thundercat.

Shabazz Palaces har gennem det meste af karrieren været en duo bestående at det kreative makkerpar Ishmael Butler og Tendai Maraire. Sidste år forlod sidstnævnte dog gruppen, der dermed reelt er blevet et solo-projekt for Butler, som dog formår at videreføre det udknaldede univers, der senest kom til udtryk på albummet “The Don of Diamond Dreams”. Albummet udkom i april 2020, altså lige mens pandemien for alvor rasede. En planlagt tour for albummet blev derfor også udskudt, men nu drager Butler endelig på landevejen - eller måske skulle vi snarere sige, at rumfærgen går i luften.

På “The Don of Diamond Dreams” forener Shabazz Palaces atter gamle myter og futuristiske visioner på et eklektisk værk, der sender hilsner til jazz, dub, funk, soul og meget mere i eksperimenterende collager, hvor husguder som Sun Ra og George Clinton fornemmes stærkt.

Endelig får vi lov til at opleve universet fra “The Don of Diamond Dreams” på dansk jord, når ALICE præsenterer koncert i Valby Kulturhus. Gør dig klar til en kosmisk forårsaften.

Ever since their debut in 2011 with “Black Up”, Shabazz Palaces has gained a reputation as one of the most visionary hip-hop projects around, mixing hip-hop with the astral imagination of Sun Ra and George Clinton, Octavia Butler and Alice Coltrane. If they technically claim residence in Seattle, their sound emanates much closer to Alpha Centauri than Alki Beach. With last year’s album, “The Don of Diamond Dreams”, Shabazz Palaces returned, now as a solo project of Ishmael Butler.

In his unstinting drive to reimagine hip-hop, Butler remains one of the preeminent visionaries of the last quarter-century. His first album with Digable Planets, Reachin (A New Refutation of Time and Space, nodded at Miles Davis in the first half of its title, but 27 years later, he has become one of the most vaunted inheritors of the trumpet deity’s rarefied legacy – still innovating as he enters his fourth decade as a working musician – splintering, rebuilding, and expanding the possibilities of sound. He has collaborated with like-minded visionaries Flying Lotus and Thundercat, Battles and Animal Collective. While all-timers like Radiohead and Lauryn Hill have invited him to join them on tour.

At ALICE we’re thrilled to finally bring Shabazz Palaces back to Copenhagen, this time with a show at Valby Kulturhus.
