COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

Dance Floor
The dance floor is for dancing. We aim to create a space for freedom of expression. Therefore, please do not use any phones or cameras on the dance floor. If you need to use your phone for any reason, step away to the bar or another area in the space. Also, please keep conversations on the dance floor to a minimum and have longer conversations at the bar or in the surrounding areas. Help us keep the space for people that really want to dance, and refrain from any behaviour that disrupts the intimacy and flow. Be mindful of how you take up space be considerate of each other’s space.

Cyphers
A cypher is a freestyle dance jam where an open circle is forming and people take turns dancing in the center. If a cypher forms, it is not reserved for trained dancers. Dancing in the cypher is open for everyone, and can be a special moment of exhilaration and release. Feel free to try it and cheer each other, watch others dance or just dance outside the cypher. There is no need to stop dancing. If a cypher gets too big and intimidating, feel free to break up the space and dance in it with friends.

Safer Space
Any violent, racist, sexist, classist, ableist, body-shaming, homophobic and/or transphobic behaviour or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated. If anything or anyone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe, do not hesitate to reach out to the staff or hosts at anytime, and they will help you out. A club space is a community space. Take care as a community and be kind to each other.

BACKGROUND & FURTHER INFORMATION
Among dance styles like Hip Hop, Ballroom and Whacking, the driving force of early club culture was House Dance, which is a free-form style that privileges self-expression and a non-judgmental attitude. It’s about coming together, community, genuine connection on the dance floor, being locked into the music. It’s all about release.
The European club culture is built on labour and artistry of the queer Black and Latinx community, which developed a music and dance culture, especially in Chicago, New York and Detroit in the 1980s, that was all about self-expression, body language and spiritual connection on the dance floor.
