UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE is an intentional club space dedicated to the early era of underground dance and club culture originating in the US, and aims to re-establish a non-judgmental safe space for self-expression and free body movement in our local clubs.

PROGRAM & COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM — INTIMATE CLUBBING & DOCUMENTARY SCREENING (RSVP required)

We would like to invite you to an intimate early session before the club night, starting with a screening of the documentary “Check Your Body At The Door”, a film about the golden era of
underground house dance and club culture in New York City. After that, the DJs and hosts will open the dance floor for an intimate clubbing experience. The aim is to reconnect with each other on the dance floor through body movement and without judgement. Therefore, we ask all participants to refrain from using their cell phones or cameras, be considerate of each other's space, and avoid any behavior that disrupts the intimacy and flow on the dance floor.

Facts:

• Capacity is very limited to 30 participants and sign-up (RSVP) is required.
• RSVP allows for free entrance to the early event and access to the club night afterwards.
• The event is held in English.
• Doors open 7:45 PM, start 8:00 PM.

10:00 PM - 5:00 AM — CLUB NIGHT

As the intimate clubbing session transitions into the club night, we would like to carry the genuine vibe and respectful mindset throughout the night. Baggen’s safer space policy applies at all times, as attached below. As always, if you see or experience something unpleasant, please reach out to the staff or hosts. A club space is a community space — Take care as a community and be kind to each other, especially during these sensitive times.

BACKGROUND & FURTHER INFORMATION

Among dance styles like Hip Hop, Ballroom and Whacking, the driving force of early club culture was House Dance, which is a free-form style that privileges self-expression and a non-judgmental attitude. It’s about coming together, community, genuine connection on the dance floor, being
locked into the music. It’s all about release. The European club culture is built on labor and artistry of the queer Black and Latinx community, which developed a music and dance culture especially in Chicago, New York and Detroit in the 1980s, that was all about self-expression, body language and spiritual connection on the dance floor.
Why did dance culture leave the clubs?
