Kom til fernisering af udstillingen VÆKST #5 Meshmerized af Jamilla Mahmoud med dessert, oplæsning af forfatter Sabita Söderholm og DJ-set af Malika Mahmoud.
Ligesom at genstande rejser over kloden i et stort handelsnet, bevæger og forandrer kulturelle betydninger sig. I udstillingen Meshmerized undersøger billedkunstner Jamilla Mahmoud kulturelle symboler og genstandes forbundethed på tværs af folkefærd, grænser og historieskrivning. Med østafrikanske tekstiler kaldet kangaer, marmorskulpturer, liljekonval-sæber og grøntsagsnet i plastik, sætter Mahmoud de store systemer af kulturelle udvekslinger og vandringer under lup. Derigennem spørger udstillingen til den ulige distribuerede ret til at definere, hvad ting betyder.

Jamilla Mahmoud (f. 1999) er studerende på andet år på Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi. Hun har tidligere studeret Marble Arts på Studio Bestanti under Christian Lange i Pietrasanta, Italien. Hun har udstillet på Galleri 22, på Førsteårsudstillingen og Galleri Q.

Om VÆKST:
Udstillingen er den femte og sidste i serien VÆKST kurateret af Ida Schyum og Nanna Saplana Thorning. Her inviteres unge kunstnere fra det danske vækstlag ind til at bidrage med perspektiver til samfundets stigende fokus på vækst. VÆKST er støttet af Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen, Statens Kunstfond, Østerbro Lokaludvalg, Roskilde Festival og Dansk Tennisfond.

GROWTH #5 Meshmerized by Jamilla Mahmoud
Come by the opening of GROWTH #5 Meshmerized by Jamilla Mahmoud. A dessert will be served at the opening, author Sabita Söderholm will do a reading, and Malika Mahmoud will play a DJ-set.

Like objects traveling across the globe in a vast trading network, cultural meanings move and change. In the exhibition Meshmerized, visual artist Jamilla Mahmoud (b. 1999) examines cultural symbols and the connectedness of objects across cultures and borders. With East African textiles called kangas, marble sculptures, lily of the valley soaps, and vegetable nets, Mahmoud puts the vast systems of cultural exchanges under the microscope. In doing so, the exhibition questions the unequally distributed right to define what things mean.

Jamilla Mahmoud (b. 1999) is a second-year student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She previously studied Marble Arts at Studio Bestanti under Christian Lange in Pietrasanta, Italy. She has exhibited at Gallery 22, at the First Year Exhibition, and Gallery Q.
The exhibition is the fifth and last in the series GROWTH curated by Ida Schyum and Nanna Saplana Thorning, where emerging young artists contribute with perspectives on society's increasing focus on growth. GROWTH is supported by the Palaces and Culture Agency, The Danish Arts Foundation, Østerbro Local Committee, Roskilde Festival, and the Danish Tennis Foundation.
