Prepare for a night of medieval melodies, 16th-century dances, and modern takes on traditional English folk songs, as UK queer folk group Goblin Band shrouds Basement in mystery and madness with their charismatic, ragged, and defiantly inclusive interpretations of centuries-old tunes. Local bardcore duo Cuirass sets the mood with a solid dose of finely crafted banquet music.

Goblin Band (UK)
Goblin Band are a queer, London-based folk group reimagining England’s musical past with unruly joy and unflinching sincerity. Formed in the wake of the pandemic out of informal sessions among a circle of young folk obsessives, the band quickly grew into a collective of multi-instrumentalists whose sound is as much inspired by medieval and early music as it is by the living traditions of Britain and beyond.
Rooted in the radical potential of English folk song, Goblin Band offer an alternative lens on the nation’s social and political histories—working-class struggle, industrialisation, colonialism—while celebrating the ecstatic, communal spirit at the heart of traditional music. Their arrangements fuse harmony singing with fiddles, squeezeboxes, recorders, hurdy-gurdy, and more, producing a sound that is charismatic, ragged, and defiantly inclusive.
Their debut EP Come Slack Your Horse! (2023) dives into repertoire stretching back to the seventeenth century, revitalising well-travelled songs with a restless energy that speaks to the present as much as the past. Tracks like the jubilant opener “Black Nag” or the raucous take on “Widecombe Fair” showcase the band’s infectious sense of play, while other material uncovers unsettling echoes between centuries-old lyrics and contemporary life.
Emerging from the vibrant scene around Hobgoblin Music in central London, Goblin Band are part of a new wave of artists reshaping English folk for a generation of young listeners. Their music is a reminder that tradition is never fixed: it is a living, breathing force, capable of both riotous celebration and sharp political resonance.
Cuirass (DK)
Two newly appointed knights, living in the dreamtime of European medieval prime, present, through bardic stories of the tavern; fairest and grimmest, a tale of pride and greed, frivolous pursuits and rivalry, peasantry and aristocracy, knighthood and damehood. A tale of burnished Cuirass.
