Du kender fornemmelsen af at træde ind i et rum morgnen efter et middagsselskab. Brugte kopper står stadig på bordet, hvor dugen - nu krøllet og gledet halvt ned på gulvet - er blevet brugt som underlag til at nedskrive de tanker og ideer, der opstod i løbet af aftenen. Det er som om samtalen stadig hænger i rummet sammen med cigaretrøg og latter, men nu fragmentarisk og smuldret, som et spor af noget, der er sket.

Det er den scene, der møder os i Eliyah Mesayer og Julie Stavads første duoudstilling. The King and the Jinn centrerer sig om mødet imellem to fiktive karakterer - en konge og en jinn, en ånd eller et genfærd på arabisk - men også om mødet imellem to kulturelle sfærer og to forskellige praksisser, der er indbyrdes forbundet i det skulpturelle og poetiske.

Bordet med den overdimensionerede dug, nu fyldt med med løse citater fra kongen og jinnens samtale, peger imod middagen som et ritual, der både kan være et venskabeligt møde mellem kolleger, og en forhandling om magt og repræsentation. Måske har kongen siddet for bordenden og fremlagt sine store tanker, nobel og bevidst om sin egen status. Måske har det været en rablende konge, der i sin ophøjede ensomhed har talt med sit eget genfærd.

I lokalets modsatte ende hænger tolv sorte skjorter til tørre. På gulvet findes endnu en skjorte, denne er hvid, og ligger delvist dyppet i en spand med sort maling, klar til at indtage sin plads på tørresnoren. Værket bliver et optagelsesritual, en transition, muligvis til staten Illiyeen, hvis uniformer også er sorte. I beduinsk kultur står farven sort for liv, mod og handling - altså en form for livsvækkelse. Måske er det også den forhandling, kongen og jinnen har haft; om magten til at beslutte, hvem der skal optages som fuldgyldige medlemmer af staten og hvem, der skal forblive en usynlig ånd?

Eliyah Mesayer er uddannet fra Det Jyske Kunstakademi i 2020. Eliyah Mesayers nation Illiyeen er ikke forankret i et sted eller en geografi, men af menneskelige møder og alkymistiske forbindelser. Mesayer har bla. udstillet på Brigade Gallery (DK), Statens Museum for Kunst (DK), Den Frie Udstillingsbygning(DK) og Kunsthal BBC (KP).

Julie Stavad er uddannet fra Det Jyske Kunstakademi i 2015. Hendes skulpturer og installationer er ofte overdimensionerede med en sans for skønhed, drama og humor. Stavad har tidligere udstillet på bla. O-Overgaden (DK), Holstebro Art Museum (DK), Kunsthal Aarhus (DK) og ISCP - International Studio & Curatorial Program (USA).

You know the feeling of stepping into a room the morning after a dinner party. Used cups are still on the table, where the tablecloth - now curled and slid halfway down to the floor - has been used as a base to write down the thoughts and ideas that arose during the evening. It's as if the conversation is still hanging in the room with cigarette smoke and laughter, but now fragmentary and crumbling, like a trace of something that has happened.

This is the scene that meets us in Eliyah Mesayer and Julie Stavad's first duo exhibition. The King and the Jinn focuses on the encounter between two fictional characters - a king and a jinn, a spirit or a ghost in Arabic - but also on the encounter between two cultural spheres and two different practices that are interconnected in sculpture and poetry.

The table with the oversized tablecloth, now filled with loose quotes from the king and the jinn's conversation, points to dinner as a ritual that can be both a friendly meeting between colleagues, and a negotiation of power and representation. Perhaps the king has sat at the end of the table and presented his great thoughts, noble and conscious of his own status. Perhaps it has been a raving king who, in his exalted solitude, has spoken to his own ghost.

At the opposite end of the room hang twelve black shirts to dry. On the floor is another shirt, this one is white, and is partially dipped in a bucket of black paint, ready to take its place on the clothesline. The work becomes a rite of passage, a transition, possibly to the state of Illiyeen, whose uniforms are also black. In Bedouin culture, the color black stands for life, courage and action - that is, a form of life revival. Perhaps this is also the negotiation the king and the jinn have had; about the power to decide who is to be admitted into the state and who is to remain an invisible spirit?

Eliyah Mesayer graduated from the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in 2020. Eliyah Mesayer's nation Illiyeen is not rooted in a place or a geography, but by human encounters and alchemical connections. Mesayer has i.a. exhibited at Brigade Gallery (DK), Statens Museum for Kunst (DK), Den Frie Udstillingsbygning (DK) and Kunsthal BBC (KP).

Julie Stavad graduated from the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. Her sculptures and installations are often oversized with a sense of beauty, drama and humor. Stavad has previously exhibited at bla. O-Overgaden (DK), Holstebro Art Museum (DK), Kunsthal Aarhus (DK) and ISCP - International Studio & Curatorial Program (USA).
