Nuri is a Tunisian-born producer and percussionist who now resides in France. Since the release of his debut solo album «DRUP» in 2017, Nuri has captured the attention of both the general public and the music industry with his distinctive approach to electronic music. His sound, influenced by Afro-futurism and enriched with live percussion, sets him apart. When performing on stage, Nuri adopts a masked persona, akin to a shaman leading a ritual, guiding music enthusiasts on a sensory journey through diverse cultural imagery.

With an artistic presence reminiscent of a mystical sage, Nuri transcends North African traditions through a sound that harmonizes authenticity and innovation. His music, deeply influenced by North African trance rituals, has left an indelible mark on various stages, from clubs in Tunis to prestigious venues like the Rex Club in France and even international events such as Denmark’s Roskilde Festival. After the release of his debut album «DRUP» in 2017 and his second album «IRUN» in 2020, Nuri released the EP «111» in 2023, solidifying his place as one of the most experimental artists in the African electronic music scene.

111 represents a fresh exploration of long-forgotten folk sounds, incorporating enriched sample textures and polyrhythmic elements. This EP features notable collaborations with renowned artists, including the Italian producer and DJ Clap! Clap! and the duo Dengue Dengue Dengue.

111 is a project that seeks to celebrate diversity, creativity, and the unifying power of music across cultures and generations. For generations, the Banga ritual has thrived in southern Tunisia, amidst the vast expanse of the Sahara and desiccated salt lakes, among the descendants of enslaved peoples and society's most marginalized groups. Yahya Chouchen, a member of the esteemed Banga family, embodies the essence of this tradition through his interpretation of the traditional Banga performance. He emerges from a lineage deeply rooted in the Banga, offering Danish audiences a unique window into a society where rituals intertwine with dance, music, song, and trance, bestowing a cleansing and soothing effect upon those present.

Within the Banga and its community, a shield against the harsh realities of racism, ridicule, and humiliation prevalent in Tunisian society emerges. It serves as a sanctuary from oppression, a realm where individuals discover strength and acceptance, where one's essence is not belittled or shunned. The Banga becomes a sanctuary where participants reclaim power, as the rituals ignite both fascination and trepidation among outsiders.

Within the confines of the Banga, spirits temporarily inhabit human vessels, guiding them through wild dances and trances fueled by pulsating music. Many are drawn to its allure, eager to experience the empowering force of the Banga and relinquish control to revel in ecstasy. Yet, it is not solely the domain of the youth; during these rituals, both young and old, men and women alike, are seized by trances that propel their bodies into frenzied movements synchronised with the music's rhythm.

As the Banga Spirits command the space, drums reverberate, and voices from the Banga family envelop attendees, transporting them into a world apart. Surrender to the rhythm, and allow yourself to be swept away on this journey.

Den tunesiske percussionist og producer Nuri har for alvor fået publikums ører op for sine fængende elektroniske grooves de seneste par år. Med en blanding af organisk slagtøj, polyrytmiske forløb, bastung elektronik og samples fra både nutid og fortid, bygger han bro mellem Tunesiens afrikanske rødder og en groovy afrofuturisme. Live får Nuri en ekstra dimension, når han på scenen fremstår som en maskeret heksedoktor, som med mystiske ritualer tager publikum på en rejse ind i sit hjemlands tabte rødder.

Nuri udgav i 2017 sit debutalbum på afrikanske Shouka - et label med fokus på både traditionel- og elektronisk musik fra især Nordafrika. “Drup” er således en hyldest til Tunesiens afrikanske arv, men med nik til andre traditioner og tæt pakket med både percussion og vokaler fra hele det afrikanske kontinent.

Nuri er et varmt live-navn, der har delt scene med grupper som Dengue Dengue Dengue og Clap Clap. Han har turneret i både Danmark og Europa hele sommeren, og var bl.a. forbi Roskilde Festival, hvor han indtog Countdown-scenen. Siden har han gjort sig bemærket med udgivelsen "IRUN" fra 2020, ep'en "111" fra 2023 og senest en collaboration med den Ukraniske producer Lazy Jesus.

Nuris musik er lige dele fængslende og familiært med et samtidigt uvirkeligt nærmest drømmeagtigt udtryk når han kombinerer ældgamle musikalske traditioner med psykedeliske lydflader, dubby beats og drømmende modulerede vokalsamples.

I generationer har Bangaen blomstret i det sydlige Tunesien, omgivet af Sahara og udtørrede saltsøer, blandt efterkommere af slaver og samfundets mest marginaliserede grupper. Banga Spirits repræsenterer en af Banga-familiens sønner: Yahya Chouchens fortolkning af den traditionelle Banga. Han stammer fra den familie, der stadig praktiserer Bangaen i dag og giver det danske publikum et enestående indblik i det samfund, der dyrker ritualer med dans, musik, sang og trance, som virker rensende og beroligende på de tilstedeværende.

Bangaen og fællesskabet omkring musikken fungerer som et skjold mod de oplevelser af racisme, latterliggørelse og ydmygelse, de møder i det tunesiske samfund. Bangaen er frihed fra undertrykkelse, et sted hvor man finder styrke og hvor der er plads til at være sig selv. Her bliver man ikke set ned på eller ekskluderet. Bangaen er et sted, hvor man genfinder magten for en stund, da ritualerne både vækker fascination og frygt hos dem, der står uden for Banga-fællesskabet.

Bangaen er det sted, hvor ånderne midlertidigt tager bolig i et menneske og overtager styringen i den vilde dans og trance, der udløses af den insisterende musik. Mange unge tiltrækkes af muligheden for at opleve den styrke, som Bangaen giver, og muligheden for at slippe kontrollen og give sig hen til ekstase. Men det er ikke kun de unge, der lader sig rive med. Under ritualerne bliver både ældre kvinder og mænd grebet af trancerne, der får deres kroppe til at vride sig i hurtige, bratte bevægelser i takt med musikken.
