I tresserne og halvfjerdserne fyldte sange om kærlighed, hjertesorg, håb og frihed Saigons gader og klubber. For midt i Vietnamkrigens uro var en ny musikgenre opstået, hvor rock, soul og bolero blev fusioneret med traditionel, vietnamesisk musik og sang – nhạc vàng. Efter Saigons fald i 1975, blev denne form for musik gjort forbudt, og forsvandt næsten. Men fire årtier senere opstod Saigon Soul Revival i 2016 med en erklæret mission. De ville være med til at bringe den groovy og dansable musikgenre tilbage på scenen.
Efter en række liveoptrædener udsendte Saigon Soul Revival i 2019 deres debutalbum, “Họa Âm Xưa”, som er et hyldestalbum til de nhạc vàng-artister og -komponister, som har inspireret bandets lyd: En medrivende, rå og psykedelisk rock forenet med traditionelle instrumenter og fremført med masser af energi. I 2024 udkom efterfølgeren ‘Mối Lương Duyên’. På ALICEs scene vil lineuppet bestå af Minh Anh Nguyễn på vokal, Đăng Nguyễn Khoa på keyboard, Indy Laville på Guitar og det traditionelle instrument Đàn Nguyệt, Gabriel Kaouros på bas, Hiếu Nguyễn Hương Bảo på trommer og Hải Phượng på de traditionelle instrumenter Đàn Tranh & Đàn Bầu. Sammen vækker de en del af Vietnams musikalske arv, som har ligget i dvale alt for længe.

Saigon Soul Revival is on a mission. They want to bring back the groovy, psychedelic, and almost forgotten sound of Vietnam in the years before 1975, nhạc vàng, back on the stage. The fusion genre brings together rock, soul and traditional Vietnamese music and instruments. The result is lively, enchanting, and hard not to dance to!
In the sixties and seventies, songs love, heartache, hope, and freedom filled the streets and clubs of Saigon. Amongst the turmoil of the Vietnam War, a new musical fusion had come to life, one that combined rock, soul, and bolero with traditional Vietnamese music and lyrics, nhạc vàng. After the fall of Saigon, the musical genre became forbidden and almost vanished. But four decade later Saigon Soul Revival arose to bring back the groovy and captivating musical genre back to the stage.
After numerous live performances, Saigon Soul Revival released their debut album in 2019. ‘Họa Âm Xưa’ is a tribute to the artists and composers that have inspired their sound: An enchanting, raw and psychedelic rock fused with traditional, Vietnamese instrumentation and performed with loads of energy. Last year, they released its successor, ‘Mối Lương Duyên’. On ALICE’s stage the lineup will be: Minh Anh Nguyễn on vocals, Đăng Nguyễn Khoa on keyboard, Indy Laville on guitar and the traditional instrument Đàn Nguyệt, Gabriel Kaouros på bas, Hiếu Nguyễn Hương Bảo on drums, and Hải Phượng on the traditional instruments Đàn Tranh & Đàn Bầu. Together they invoke a part of Vietnam’s cultural history that has been dormant for too long!
